The Brief
Pooleys has been the standard reference for UK and Irish airfield and airspace information since 1962. Their printed Flight Guides — covering every airfield plate, approach chart, and navigation reference a pilot needs — had built a loyal following, but pilots increasingly needed that information on mobile devices, available offline and updated regularly. The client needed an app that could deliver subscription-based guide content to iOS and Android users, keep it current on a 28-day update cycle, and work reliably without a network connection in environments where connectivity can't be assumed.
What We Built
We built the Pooleys iPlates app for iOS and Android, giving pilots access to the full UK and Ireland Flight Guides through an in-app subscription model. The core technical challenge was delivering and rendering aviation plates — dense, precisely formatted PDF documents — consistently across a wide range of screen sizes and device generations. Offline access was built in from the start: content syncs when a connection is available and remains fully accessible without one. Users can organise plates into personal favourites folders and are notified when updated content is ready to download, ensuring the guide on their device reflects the latest 28-day revision cycle.
The Result
The app has become the go-to digital reference for pilots flying in the UK and Ireland, accumulating many downloads and establishing itself as the standard mobile companion to the Pooleys Flight Guide — a brand that has held the No.1 position in UK aviation navigation since 1962. For Pooleys, the app extended a trusted print product into a format that works in the cockpit, on the ground, and everywhere in between.
