The Brief
Politiken is one of Denmark's most widely read broadsheet newspapers, founded in 1884 and operating a large digital platform covering domestic news, culture, opinion, and international affairs. Their journalists were working on investigative topics that had nothing structurally in common — different data, different storytelling formats, different editorial needs. A single off-the-shelf CMS couldn't accommodate both without forcing compromises that would slow editorial work and limit how stories could be told online.
What We Built
We delivered a custom CMS for Politiken in two distinct versions, each designed around the specific requirements of a different investigative topic. Rather than building one flexible system with toggles and workarounds, each version had its own structure, editorial interface, and content model — tuned to the way Politiken's journalists actually worked on that subject. This kept the tooling clean and the editorial workflow fast, without one topic's requirements bleeding into the other's.
The Result
Politiken's journalists could publish complex investigative content without adapting their process to the software. Each version of the CMS matched the structure of the work itself, which meant less friction at the point of publication and more control over how stories were presented to readers on politiken.dk. For a newsroom that moves daily and publishes at volume, that kind of fit between tool and workflow has a direct effect on output quality.
